2009

Abby Bartholomew of La Vista is an independent designer in graphic communications at the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services in Omaha.

Luke Nichols has joined the Beatrice Daily Sun as a staff writer.

2008

Katelyn Ideus, Chesterfield, Mo., is the physician services assistant at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo.

Brittany Jeffers of Lincoln, was crowned Miss Nebraska in June. She is currently a reporter at KLKN-TV in Lincoln and competed in the Miss America 2010 pageant in January where she finished in the top 10.

Michele Kaiserman, Omaha, is an associate executive at with Mechanical Contractors Association of Omaha.

2007

T.J. Montemer of Santa Monica, Calif., is the publisher and editor for Santa Monica Mirror Inc. He serves on the board of directors for Project Save Our Surf and OCEANA, an international organization focused on ocean conservation. Montemer also volunteers for the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Monica, the Rotary Club and the Westside Shelter and Hunger Coalition.

Jesse Boeckermann of Charlottesville, Va., is a sports reporter/photographer for the NBC affiliate WVIR-TV

William George Arnold III, Cody, was hired as an English teacher at Cody-Kilgore Unified High School.

Van Jensen, Atlanta, Ga., co-authored the book “Pinocchio: Vampire Slayer” with Dustin Higgins. Jensen is a comic book writer and artist.

2003

Marcy Hunter of Lincoln was named the new coordinator for the Nebraska Grazing Lands Coalition. She will be implementing tours and workshops, managing grant fulfillment and conducting public awareness for the organization. She is also the Nebraska representative for the national Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative and oversees the Cowboy Logic Stewardship Network.

Brooke Janousek, Omaha, was named the director of programs at the Nebraska Alumni Association. She is an active member of the Lincoln Chapter of the American Marketing Association and the Omaha Federation of Advertising, where she is currently vice president and treasurer.

2002

Amanda McGill of Lincoln is a Nebraska state senator and represented the United States at a government exchange program in New Zealand in September 2009.

2001

Karissa Armstrong, Omaha, was promoted to media director with Bozell & Jacobs LLC, an integrated marketing communications consulting firm. She is currently the vice president of All About Omaha, a non-profit organization comprised of young professionals who are looking to get involved civically and socially.

2000

Allen Forkner is the communications director for the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office.

Andy Washburn of Lincoln has been elected as the third president of the Council of Alumni Marketing and Membership Professionals. Washburn is the director of marketing and corporate relations for the Nebraska Alumni Association.

1997

Angie Bring Bentley, Council Bluffs, Iowa, is the online director for Campus Crusade for Christ.

1992

Bill Vobejda, Fremont, has been promoted to regional publisher of the Fremont Tribune, Columbus Telegram and weekly newspapers in Schuyler and David City. Vobejda and his wife, Joan, have two children, Leah, 11, and Anna, 8.

1991

Darran Fowler has been named the associate publisher of the Hastings Tribune. Currently, he serves as the vice president of the Nebraska Press Association. Fowler and his wife, Toni, have three children.

1988

Colleen Kenney, a Lincoln Journal Star reporter, was awarded four individual awards in the Excellence in Feature Writing Contest of the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors Sept. 25, 2009. She won a first-place award in the arts and entertainment category, first- and second-place awards in the short feature category and third place in the feature-specialty reporting category.

1987

Karol Burchfield, Omaha, serves as the first female service unit general superintendent of the Union Pacific Railroad. Burchfield also helped pioneer the Lead, Educate, Achieve and Develop program dedicated to women’s career development at Union Pacific.

1986

Kristin Ward Camp, Omaha, is the marketing coordinator at Alvine Engineering.

1984

Mark Quandahl replaced Kerry Winterer as the second district board member of the State Board of Education on Aug. 17. He is vice president and an attorney with the Omaha law firm Brumbaugh & Quandahl and was formerly a state senator. Quandahl, his wife, Stacey, and their three children live in Omaha.

1983

Karie Keown, Omaha, is the general manager of Presto-X, an industrial and commercial pest control company.

1980

Jeff Barnes is a historian and freelance writer. He is a former newspaper reporter and editor, press secretary for then-Gov. Ben Nelson, past chairman of the Nebraska Hall of Fame Commission and marketing director for the Durham Museum in Omaha. Most recently, Barnes traveled more than 13,000 miles to research and photograph “Forts of the Northern Plains,” which was published in June 2008.

1974

Robert Anderson of San Jose, Calif., founded Red Willow Films, a production group. Currently, Anderson produces the television show “Eco Company.”

1971

Dennis Hetherington has lived in Las Vegas for the last 33 years. He retired four years ago after a long career in public relations, which began with Northern Natural Gas, and has done freelance writing and has taught media relations as an adjunct at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. He is the editor of Sea Stories, the monthly newsletter of the Navy League’s Las Vegas council. He also has developed and directed numerous media relations programs.

Kent Pavelka, Omaha, started the company Kent Pavelka & Associates in 2006. The company provides niche services to endorse products using Pavelka’s experience as a radio and television personality.

1970

Roger Boye of Evanston, Ill., represented Chancellor Harvey Perlman and the University of Nebraska at the installation of Morton Schapiro as the 16th president of Northwestern University.

1969

Stuart Frohm, Midland, Mich., retired in September from a 30-year position with the Midland (Mich.) Daily News. Frohm was a wire editor, political writer and a member of the editorial board. Frohm volunteers at an annual hot-air balloon festival and for the Special Olympics.

Maxine Moul, Lincoln, has been appointed the first woman Nebraska State Director of Rural Development at the USDA by President Obama. Moul was also the first female lieutenant governor of Nebraska under then-Gov. Ben Nelson and was the president of the Nebraska Community Foundation.  Most recently, she served as the coordinator of EndowNebraska, a nonprofit that builds permanent endowments for charitable organizations.

1967

Eric Brown, Lexington, received the Nebraskan’s Friend Award July 4, 2009, for his service across the state. He is the general manager of the Nebraska Rural Radio Association and board member of the National Association of Broadcasters. He and his wife, Ruth, have twin daughters, Andrea and Valerie, Lincoln, and a son, Nathan, Washington, D.C. Ruth is on the CoJMC faculty.

Bill and Wynn Nuckolls of Lincoln celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Sept. 20, 2009.

Tara Gill, Omaha, was married to Corey Chickinell July 31, 2009, in Lincoln.

Abbey Green and Andrew Peterson were married Aug. 8, 2009, in Lincoln. She will begin law school at UNL in the fall.

2008

Tiffani Gamblin, Grand Island, Neb., was married to Luke Dea of O’Neil, Neb., on Oct. 10, 2009. Gamblin is a reporter and anchor for KOTA Territory News in Scottsbluff. She is also a children’s fitness instructor.

Lindsey Rodriguez, Lincoln, was married Aug. 29, 2009, to Ray Hacker. She is currently employed at Counseling and Psychological Services at UNL.

Ashley Tremayne, Walthill, was married to Darrel Christensen June 27, 2009, in Walthill.

2006

Carrie Kitt, Schuyler, was married Aug. 15, 2009, to Bryan Kearney in Columbus. She is an advertising director for QC Supply in Schuyler.

1997

Alexis M. Thomas, was married to Russell Parrish June 20, 2009, in York, Neb. She is employed as the PR director for The Smile Train in New York City.

BIRTHS

Andrew, ’00, and Ashley Anderson Washburn, ’02, their first child, a son, Evan Daniel, Nov. 24, 2009. The family lives in Lincoln.

DEATHS

1978

Beth Bohling, Davenport, died March 11, 2009. Bohling was the first woman in Nebraska to receive a master’s in journalism from UNL. Her journalism career includes writing for a newspaper in Chicago and working as the society editor for the Hastings Tribune. She held the position of regional correspondent for the Hastings Tribune at the time of her death. Throughout her life, Bohling was an active member of the South Central Area Rallying to Eliminate Drugs (SCARED) and wrote a grant, which led to the formation of a youth soccer league in Nuckolls County.

1952

Jack Hart, Lincoln, died Sept. 19, 2009, at age 85. Hart served as a reporter and editor for the Lincoln Journal Star for 30 years. He left the Journal Star in 1981 to be a special assistant to Nebraska Gov. Charles Thone for two years. He went on to work as a lobbyist for the city of Lincoln and ran his own public relations business. In addition, he was a board member of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce. After retiring in 1991 to Sun City, Ariz., Hart was president of the Nebraska Club of the Sun Cities.

1948

Bernice Paperny Wolfson, 82, of Omaha, died in July 2009. She was a successful businesswoman and advocate for blind children, founding the Nebraska Foundation for Visually Impaired Children, which she headed for 50 years. She also started Dippy Donut Shoppes, Babe’s Diner and the Revolving Door Lounge. She is survived by her husband, Ron, sons and daughters-in-law, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
