Fall 2009 CoJMC faculty notes

Rick Alloway conducted two sessions for incoming freshman during the “Power Up” weekend in August; was master of ceremonies for the annual Employee Service Awards ceremony on Sept. 10; coordinated judging and served as a judge for contest entries for the New Hampshire Broadcasters Association; provided voice-over narration for the Nebraska Broadcasters Association 75th anniversary documentary; hosted the monthly governor’s call-in radio show for the Nebraska Broadcasters Association featuring Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman and became the host for a similar quarterly NBA show featuring Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson.

Tim Anderson added four chapters to his John Neihardt biography last summer.

Charlyne Berens was part of an accrediting team that visited the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg in November. She represented the college at several meetings and conferences connected to the Carnegie-Knight Initiative on the Future of Journalism Education.

John Bender wrote and presented a paper on the U.S. Supreme Court’s Gannett v. DePasquale decision at AEJMC in Boston.

Ruth Brown was appointed to a tenure-leading line as an associate professor; attended the National Association of Broadcasters conference in Washington, D.C., and the Nebraska Association of Broadcasters conference in LaVista.

Sue Burzynski Bullard was inducted into the Michigan State News Hall of Fame; appeared on a panel on the future of journalism at the Michigan State University law school; accompanied students to the regional American Copy Editors Society conference in Columbia, Mo.; published an article on rookie copy editor mistakes in the American Copy Editors Society newsletter; and organized a daylong workshop on journalism ethics and new technology at UNL on Nov. 6.

Kathy Christensen traveled to the University of Alaska in Fairbanks as part of an accrediting team visit; organized the launch of the ABC News on Campus bureau.

Trina Creighton hosted NETV’s documentary festival at the Ross Theatre in Lincoln and at Girls Inc. in Omaha.

Frauke Hachtmann published an article in Advertising & Society Review called “Promoting Consumerism in West Germany During the Cold War: An Agency Perspective.” She presented at the AEJMC Ad Division teaching workshop in Boston.

Stacy James continued to edit both the Journal of Advertising Education and AEJMC’s Advertising Division’s Ad News.

Carla Kimbrough organized an October job fair for CoJMC students featuring more than a dozen employers.

Laurie Thomas Lee attended AEJMC in Boston as a paper discussant.

Bruce Mitchell traveled to Zambia with the grant-funded Omaha Science Media Project (OSMP), which explores the idea that teens can learn science better if they learn to tell stories about research the way journalists do. In Zambia, Bruce shot interviews with teens about the effect AIDS has had on their lives. He also attended the AEJMC conference in Boston.

Nancy Mitchell attended AEJMC in Boston where she served as a discussant.

Mary Kay Quinlan edited the fall issue of the Oral History Association newsletter.

Joe Starita has begun research on a new book about the life and death of Susan La Flesche Picotte, the nation’s first female Native American doctor. He attended the Miami International Book Fair in November to discuss his current book: “I Am A Man – Chief Standing Bear’s Journey for Justice.” Last summer, he delivered four presentations as a guest author at the 25th annual Chicago Tribune Printer’s Row Literary Festival, and he gave an hour-long talk on Standing Bear that was broadcast nationally on C-Span’s Book TV.

Amy Struthers attended the National Student Advertising Competition in Washington, D.C., as the adviser for the team; participated in the Omaha Science Media Project two-week workshop; presented a paper at AEJMC in Boston on the Archrival Faculty Fellowship research concerning teens and trends; presented a paper at the third national Centers for Disease Control conference on Health Marketing Communications; traveled to Murray State University in Kentucky as part of an accrediting team visit; and began working with two UCARE students on projects involving research communication strategies for the college and the archives of the Tractor Museum on East Campus.

Sriyani Tidball traveled to Sri Lanka last summer where she worked in an Internally Displaced People camp.  She also co-chaired a Human Trafficking Conference at UNL in October.

Bruce Thorson accompanied three student photographers across Nebraska last summer to produce “Searching for the Real Nebraska: A Photo Essay on the Great Recession,” which opened at the Great Plains Art Museum this month; and produced in-depth slide shows on Kosovo and South Africa.

Adam Wagler taught in the Omaha Science Media Project workshop last summer and conducted a workshop on developing good Web sites at the Nebraska Broadcasters Association conference.

Larry Walklin wrote a script for a video presentation for the 75th anniversary of the Nebraska Broadcasters Association and a print history that was distributed at the group’s convention.

Phil Willet was appointed to a tenure-leading assistant professor position; traveled with students participating in the National Student Advertising Competition to Washington, D.C., for the national American Advertising Federation conference; launched a Social Media Club as faculty adviser.

Scott Winter wrote a story for a national high school journalism teacher magazine about a journalism program in El Paso; last summer he worked with a nonprofit group called Play for Africa, which uses soccer as a way to educate African kids about AIDS.

John Wunder arranged for the start of an online journal for the Sandoz Society.
